far can a thermal camera really see? 1000 m, 1800 m or 2300 m – what do these numbers actually mean?

One of the first figures a buyer notices in a thermal camera description is the detection range.

1000 metres.

1800 metres.

2300 metres.

Sometimes even more.

At first glance it seems simple – the bigger the number, the better the thermal camera.

In reality it is not that simple.

Many hunters are surprised after buying, because the 1800 or 2300 metres promised in advertising by no means implies that an animal can be accurately assessed at that distance.

To make the right choice, you need to understand what manufacturers actually mean by these numbers.

What does detection range mean?

Internationally, the Johnson criteria are usually used for thermal cameras.

They divide observation into three levels:

Detection

Recognition

Identification

This is exactly where the great confusion arises.

When a manufacturer writes:

"Detection range 2300 metres"

it usually means that in ideal conditions you can notice that there is some warm object far away.

Not that you can clearly see a wild boar or a moose.

What is the difference between detection and recognition?

Imagine an autumn evening at the edge of a field.

At 2300 metres a small bright dot appears on the screen.

You can see that something is there.

That is detection.

But is it:

a person

a wild boar

a moose

a cow

a vehicle?

You do not know yet.

For that you need recognition.

Recognition means you can assess the shape and movement of the object.

Identification means you know fairly certainly what it is.

For the hunter, identification is what matters most.

In the forest it is not enough to know that a warm object is moving somewhere.

It is important to know which animal it is.

Why doesn't 2300 metres always mean more benefit?

This question surprises many buyers.

If most of your observation takes place at 100–300 metres, a 2300-metre detection range may not give any practical advantage.

Far more important may be:

image quality

NETD

field of view

ease of use

sensor quality.

Experienced hunters often look at the image first and only then at the detection range.

Which distances matter most in Estonian hunting?

Most hunting situations take place:

in the forest at 50–150 metres

at feeding sites at 50–200 metres

on fields at 100–400 metres.

That is why hunting success is not usually determined by whether the thermal camera sees 1800 or 2300 metres.

What matters more is how well it shows the animal at 150–400 metres.

That is where most decisions are made.

What does the lens size affect?

The lens is one of the main factors determining the observation range.

35 mm lens:

wider field of view

faster to find the game

well suited to forest hunting.

50 mm lens:

longer detection range

more detail at a distance

well suited to open terrain.

That is why a bigger lens is not always better.

It all depends on where you hunt most often.

Does more magnification mean a better image?

Not always.

This is one of the most common misconceptions.

If you magnify the image too much, the field of view becomes narrower.

Finding the animal can actually become harder.

Many experienced hunters prefer moderate magnification and a quality sensor.

That way the game is found faster and the image stays natural.

What does the hunter see at different distances?

100 metres

With a quality thermal camera you can see a lot of detail.

Often you can see:

the shape of the head

body proportions

movement.

300 metres

A device with a good 640×480 sensor lets you assess the animal with confidence.

This distance is one of the most important in Estonian hunting.

500 metres

The animal is clearly visible.

Identifying the species now depends more on sensor quality and weather conditions.

1000 metres

Most quality thermal cameras show the presence of an animal.

Detail starts to diminish.

1800–2300 metres

Usually the presence of an object can be detected.

Identification becomes difficult.

Why do two thermal cameras with the same range see differently?

This is a question you hear often.

Two devices may advertise the same detection range.

In the forest their image can be completely different.

The reasons:

sensor quality

NETD

optical quality

image processing

display quality.

That is why a thermal camera should not be chosen on the basis of a single number.

Which distance really matters?

The honest answer is simple.

Not how far the device can see.

But how far you can correctly assess the animal.

If one thermal camera shows a clear and detailed image at 300 metres and the other only a warm patch, the first is more valuable to the hunter even if both have the same detection range.

How to choose a thermal camera by observation range?

If you hunt mainly in the forest:

a wide field of view is important

a 35 mm lens is often the best choice.

If you hunt on fields:

a bigger lens can give an advantage

a 50 mm lens helps you see further.

If you want an all-round solution:

choose a balance between image quality, field of view and range.

Summary

1000 m, 1800 m or 2300 m do not tell the whole truth.

These numbers usually describe the maximum detection range in ideal conditions.

For the hunter, far more important questions are:

How quickly will I notice the animal?

How well will I identify the animal?

How confidently can I assess the situation?

A good thermal camera is not the one that sees the furthest.

A good thermal camera is the one that helps you make the right decision at the right moment.

That is why experienced hunters value image quality, sensor sensitivity and reliability more than just big numbers in a spec table.

One of the first figures a buyer notices in a thermal camera description is the detection
